Wearing thick gloves and boots, officials with the Roanoke County Fire Marshal’s Office and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives dug through the rubble of a house Sunday morning destroyed by fire Saturday night.

Roanoke County Deputy Fire Marshal Brian Simmons said his office asked the ATF for assistance due to the size and intensity of the blaze, not because of any evidence that had been found in their investigation.

“We only just started looking through it,” he said. “It’s only just now begun to cool down.”
