Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue
Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, located in southern Gloucester County recently placed Tanker 5 in service. The truck is a 2008 Pierce Contender built on a International 7600 chassis with 64,000 GVW. The vehicle has a 3000 gallon elliptical poly tank with 1000 GPM Hale QPAK pump, Allison EVS4000 automatic transmission, color back-up camera, 10″ air assisted dump on each side in the rear, and a manual 10″ from the rear. An extended bumper on the front has a 2 1/2″ discharge and a tray for hose, as well as a Federal Q2B siren and two air horns. A 3000 gallon dump tank is mounted on the driver side with a Zico Quic-Lift, and on the passenger side is a tray for 3″ hose. Two 1 – 3/4″cross-lays and a deck set are mounted above the pump panel, in addition to a storage area. Compartments on each side carry all necessary equipment and have roll up doors. 2 – SCBA compartments are located over each tandem axle and space for 3 spare SCBA bottles is also on the sides.
The tanker will be located at station 5 on Providence road and is located centrally to assist with mutual aid throughout Gloucester County.The tanker was specified to be a close match to Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squads Tanker 6, and GVF&RS members were a large help in the process of designing the vehicle.
