The Virginia Professional Fire Fighters held its annual Legislative Conference in Richmond January 12-14th. The conference was created as a tool for firefighters to learn about legislation which effects them. Some of the legislation was created by the VPFF and sponsored in the House and Senate. The firefighters converge on Richmond while the General Assembly is in session. This year there are several bills which are the focus of the Firefighters efforts.
The event also provided the opportunity for the Virginia Governors to appeal to the firefighters for their support. Bob McDonnell is running as the sole unopposed Republican, and the Democratic Race has begun heating up between Brian Moran, Creigh Deeds, and Terry McAuliffe. McDonnell was the only Candidate unable to attend the event, although he did send his assistant to speak to the firefighters. Governor Tim Kaine was also on hand to speak to the firefighters.
Throughout the day, several other politicians stopped by to speak to the firefighters about certain legislation. Paula Miller (87th House District) was presented with the Legislator of the Year Award by the VPFF.
IAFF General President Harold Shaitberger attended the event along with 4th District Vice President Bill Taylor. The firefighters will gear up for the IAFF Legislative Conference in March where they will be doing the same thing on the Federal level.
