Chesterfield firefighters and forestry tackle high wind brush fires

Kimlynn Drive brush and woodlands were fast becoming engulfed, with wind gusts near 50 mph turned the flames into a blowtorch lighting up the landscape, fire crews dug in and attacked the beast.

Tones sounded at 2:07 p.m. on Feb. 10 for a brush fire on Kimlynn Drive. Winds rejoiced in the opportunity and took the fire in its grip, sweeping embers and flames across dried grasses, fallen trees and anything in its path.

It was a Red Flag Warning day and firefighters had their work cut out for them.

Initially responding was Engine 15 and Brush 1.The call was quickly upgraded and Engine 11 was dispatched. Another dispatch and Engine 19,Engine 14,Tanker 6,Brush 6, Brush 10 and Forestry 4 was en route. The Tactical Safety Officer, a battalion chief and Division Commander Mark Berry was on scene. Chesterfield County Police also assisted.

In synchronized efforts,5-inch supply was laid, multiple hand lines snaked across the road into the fields and woods and the charged lines came quickly to life, Engine 14 hit the fire with deck gun blasts. After an initial attack, crews were pulled from the woods and the forestry dozer cut fire breaks.

After the fire lines were cut, crews attacked the blaze again and forest crews set several back fires to eliminate the fire’s fuel.
Extensive overhaul was performed.

The aggressive attack soon had the blaze under control. Around four acres burned all nearby homes were protected and no injuries were reported.

The fire is under investigation.
