NEW MARKET — The fire department appears to have turned over a new leaf.
After a well-publicized scandal led town and county officials to cut off the department’s funding last fall, the department seems to be making significant improvements to its operations. Town and county officials seem once again willing to trust the department with its money.
Last week, New Market Town Councilman Gary Comer made a plea to the county public safety code and administration committee to restore the department’s funding. Up until last fall, the department received roughly $50,000 in annual contributions, including $30,000 from the county and $20,000 from the town.
