Vinton Church Fire Causes Significant Damage to Sanctuary

March 10, 2009 (ROANOKE COUNTY) – Roanoke County Fire and Rescue was dispatched to the 600 block of Vale Avenue in Vinton just after 10 p.m. for a reported structure fire.

When firefighters arrived, they found smoke showing from the eaves of a single story wood framed church. Crews entered the structure and found flames in the back of the sanctuary. Crews were able to quickly attack the fire and extinguished it in about 10 minutes. The sanctuary of the church sustained significant damage.

A male adult subject suffered unknown injuries and was transported to a local hospital. A volunteer firefighter suffered minor smoke inhalation and was treated on scene.

Fire investigators are on scene trying to determine what caused this fire.
