Firefighter creates bath water temperature indicator for parents

Richmond firefighter David Loving is on a mission to prevent children from being burned by scalding bath water.

Loving, after hearing a presentation on bath-time scaldings at a conference he attended, created a plastic bath-water temperature gauge in the shape of a toy bear.

It’s light blue. Drop it into a baby’s bath water, and if the water temperature is too hot for baby — about 94 degrees or more — it changes to a pinkish red.

“It’s not so much that a parent is not capable of or willing to put a hand in the water each time, but it makes it easy for them to look down and see if something is a different color,” Loving said.

While I do think anyone thinking of this is great it is not a new idea. I have a rubber duckie for my daughter that is blue on the bottom and when the water gets too hot the letters “HOT” show up in the blue. We also have one of those things that goes over the spout to avoid a kid from hitting their heads and it also has a sensor that says and display that says the actual temp of the water and if its blue its too cold green its ok and red its too hot. If you get it more than a degree or two over the hot level it starts to beep and progressively gets louder/longer as it gets hotter.

I think the great part of this though is that the more products you get out there like this the more people that will tend to use them.
