On April 30, 2009, Roanoke Fire-EMS responded to a residential
structure fire at 1420 Mason Mill Rd. The call was received in the
E-911 Center at 10:57 p.m. and was ruled under control at 11:08 p.m.
The response of 4 engines, 1 ladder truck, 2 medic units, 1 EMS
Captain, 2 Battalion Chiefs, the Investigation Unit and the Service
Truck for a total of 27 personnel responded to the scene.
When crews arrived they found heavy smoke coming from the house and
flames coming out of the basement/garage door, extending along the
exterior of the house toward the roof. Crews extinguished the fire
and searched inside to make sure no one was trapped.
There were three people in the house when the fire started. They
escaped without any injuries. There were no injuries to civilians or
Fire-EMS personnel. One cat did die in the fire due to smoke
inhalation.
The fire started in the basement. The fire was started by a heat
source too close to combustibles. Damage estimates are approximately
$60,000. Three people were displaced from the home. They are being
assisted by the American Red Cross.
