Press release from the Roanoke Fire-EMS Department:

On Wednesday, July 29, 2009, Roanoke Fire-EMS responded to a 4th alarm structure fire at 404 McClanahan St. This commercial building houses several businesses including Fresenius Medical Care Crystal Springs Dialysis as well as several residential apartments. The call was received in the E-911 Center at approximately 10:20 p.m. The response of 8 engines, 4 ladder trucks, 4 medic units, 4 Battalion Chiefs, 1 EMS Captain, 2 Administrative Chiefs, the Fire Marshal, the Assistant Fire Marshal, the Service Truck and the Emergency Manager for a total of 67 personnel responded to the scene. County Wagon 7, Vinton Ladder 2, Squad 1 and Roanoke County Air 9 also responded to the scene to assist with this fire.

When crews arrived they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the three story building. Crews elevated the response to a 4th alarm fire to receive more apparatus and manpower.

No injuries were reported at the fire scene to fire-ems personnel or civilians. There was no one in the building when the fire started.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Due to the damage, the investigation is expected to take at least 5 days. Preliminary damage estimates are at least $3 to $4 million.

Roanoke Fire-EMS appreciates the assistance of Roanoke County Fire & Rescue as well as Salem Fire-EMS and Vinton. They assisted in staffing our stations when needed during this event as well as helping on the fire scene. McDonalds in Vinton graciously donated food to firefighters on the scene.

Roanoke County Air 9 was also there. And several other Roanoke County stations sent out units to fill some of the Roanoke City stations while their units were out on that fire.
