Fraternity House Burns in Radford June 7, 2009. Photos below.
At 23:44 hours Radford Fire and Rescue was dispatched to 1030 Clement Street for a report of a structure fire. The fire department responded 7 pieces of equipment and 24 members.
Upon arrival Engine 2 found a 2-story wood framed structure with fire showing from the second floor. Engine 2 picked up the hydrant at the corner of Clement Street and First Avenue and operated 3 handlines, deck gun and supplied Aerial 5.
Command was established by Command 1 and an exterior attack was indicated. This was due to the fact the residence was vacant and due to the unknown structural integrity of the residence. The residence was scheduled for demolition with in the next 2 weeks for a local development.
Aerial 5 was positioned at the “A/D” corner to provide an elevated master stream for exposure protection on the “D” side of the structure.
Engine 3 was brought to the “A/D” corner to provide scene lighting.
Engine 7 was staged at the corner of Grove Avenue and First Avenue to lay a line into the scene if needed.
Radford EMS responded 2 ALS units and 1 ALS response vehicle, City of Radford Police and Radford University Police provided traffic and crowd control.
The residence was last occupied by a Radford University fraternity. The fraternity’s lease had run out and the residence was vacant.
The residence was a total loss and there where no injuries.
The Fire Chief has ruled this fire as an arson fire.
