WILLIAMSBURG – When T.K. “Buz” Weiler reported for duty with the Williamsburg Fire Department on May 1, 1967, one of the first things he was asked was if he could drive a truck.
“I said ‘Sure I can,’” Weiler said Tuesday, his last official day as fire chief. “So the deputy chief said ‘Good, you can drive this one.’ ”
It was a 1949 Mack pumper and was Weiler’s first assignment of his 42-year career as a Williamsburg firefighter. It still runs and can carry and pump water. Coming full circle, the truck is now prominently displayed inside the front lobby of the department’s brand-new Emergency Services Center — the building that was Weiler’s final major project to oversee as fire chief.
