Rocky Mount councilman’s fire chief role questioned

ROCKY MOUNT — One councilman’s request for a legal opinion about the potential conflict of interest created by another councilman serving as a department head was denied Monday.

Rocky Mount Town Councilman John Lester called into question Councilman Posey Dillon and his job as the town’s fire chief.

“In rural communities with low budgets, people wear many hats,” Lester said, calling the occurrence unfortunate. “It’s a conflict of state code, and I feel like it needs to be addressed. These codes are put in place for a reason. Whether it applies to us or not is not up to us to decide.”
