VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Losing one firefighter was hard enough for the Virginia Beach Fire Department. April Elmore worked with William “Duke” Lee for years before he lost his battle with cancer in August 2008.
“Any time you have a line-of-duty death of a firefighter, it’s always moving,” Elmore said.
Three months later, Alan Barber lost his battle and the department lost yet another firefighter. “When it is your own, it’s like your mother, your father, your sister, your brother,” said Elmore, “and it makes it a lot more personal, a lot more emotional.”
