NEWPORT NEWS – Eight people were injured in an explosion at a Newport News middle school just before 7 a.m. Sunday, police officials said.
The workers were working at the rear of the Flora D. Crittenden Middle School on Jefferson Avenue, with the roof being fixed after recent storms, said Newport News police spokesman Lou Thurston.
Crittenden Middle will be closed Monday and is expected to reopen Tuesday.
The explosion tore a 20-foot-by-50-foot hole into the building, with fire extending into the building from that area.
