Poquoson’s C-shift firefighters braved 50 mile per hour winds and driving rain in fighting a structure fire during last week’s Nor’easter. On Wednesday, November 11 at approximately 1805, E-102, E-207, M-10, R-8, Batt-1, Chief-2 responded to a reported structure fire at 157 Church St. in Poquoson. Responding units, enduring flooded streets and downed trees, arrived within four minutes of dispatch, to a two-story unattached garage with flames through the roof. Command was established and a defensive exterior attack was ordered due to rapid fire spread and high fire load inside the structure. High winds hampered firefighter’s efforts until additional lines could be deployed and implemented as driving rain kept the flames from igniting the nearby house and trees. The fire was brought under control, without further incident, within two hours and overhaul operations commenced. Units remained on scene for several hours, extinguishing hot spots and maintaining watch until 0300 Thursday morning. The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental however, is still under investigation.
