It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Larry Smallwood a friend to all in the fire service. Larry passed away on November 14th, 2009. He was a past president of the CVVFA. He was a lifetime member of South End Co 5 in Winchester, a lifetime member of Round Hill Co 15 in Frederick County and an honored member of Gore Co 14 in Frederick County. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Obituary:
Larry W. Smallwood, 73, of Martinsburg, WV, formerly of Winchester, VA died on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at his home.
Mr. Smallwood was born on March 26, 1936 in Frederick County, VA, a son of the late Wilson D. and Ruth Larrick Smallwood. Larry was a truck driver and veteran of the U.S. Navy. Lifelong dedication to the Fire and Rescue Services. A member of the Gore Vol. Fire & Rescue in Gore, VA, Honor Guard at the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD and First United Methodist Church in Winchester, VA. He attended the Blue Ridge Grace Brethren Church in Winchester, VA and St. Agnes Catholic Church in Shepherdstown, WV. A lifetime member of South End Fire Company, Round Hill Fire & Rescue and Cumberland Valley Vol. Fireman’s Association where he served as past president.
Mr. Smallwood married to Phyllis K. Smallwood on May 17, 2008 in Shepherdstown, WV. Preceded in death by his first wife: Shirley Pope Smallwood. Mrs. Smallwood died October 2, 2006. Also preceded in death by one daughter: Beth Ann Smallwood and one brother: Lester Smallwood.
Surviving with his wife is one daughter Tara L. DeHaven and husband Todd of Stephens City, VA; one step-daughter: Phyllis Jean Hovermale and fiancé Frank McCusker of Berkeley Springs, WV; two brothers: Leonard Smallwood of Fayesville, PA; Louis Smallwood of Falling Waters, WV; five grandchildren: Clint A. DeHaven, Amber S. DeHaven, Matthew Hovermale, April Hovermale, Tonya Hovermale and her companion Zach Morrison; one great-grandson: Canyon Morrison.
A funeral service will be at Blue Ridge Grace Brethren Church, 1025 Ceder Creek Grade, Winchester, VA 22602 on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 1:00 PM. Officiating will be Pastor Darrel Taylor and Father Matthew Rowgh. Interment will be at the Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Winchester, VA.
Family will receive friends at the Blue Ridge Grace Brethren Church on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 from 2-4 and 6-9 PM.
