Spotsylvania fire: Woman dies, one saved in blaze

A 74-year-old Spotsylvania woman died yesterday morning as the result of a fire that started with her smoking in bed, fire officials said.

The fire was reported at 10:49 p.m. Tuesday at 10134 Gordon Road, Deputy Fire Marshal Phil Sullivan said.

Volunteer firefighters arrived a few minutes later, forced their way into the home and rescued an 88-year-old resident.

Betty Anderson, the home-owner, was treated at Mary Washington Hospital and released. She was found on the floor in the kitchen-dining room area.
