Campbell County has hired a new director of public safety, County Administrator David Laurrell said.

Scott Hechler, who lives in Powhatan, will start his new job March 1.

Laurrell said Hechler worked for more than 20 years as a career firefighter and paramedic for Chesterfield County. He served as chief deputy of the Virginia Department of Fire Programs in Gov. Mark Warner's administration. Since leaving that position, Hechler has worked in the private sector on emergency preparedness and planning.

The county was looking for someone who was not only highly qualified, but who would also be a good “fit” for the county.

“We're looking forward to having him on board,” said Laurrell.
