Pittsylvania County's 21 volunteer fire departments, including Hurt, will receive new radios thanks to a $716,800 Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Chatham Volunteer Fire Department, which applied for the federal grant, recently received notification of the award. The total project is $896,000.
“This is a regional grant for all of the fire departments in Pittsylvania County,” said Steve Finkner, a member of the Chatham Volunteer Fire Department and president of the Pittsylvania County Fire and Rescue Association.
The grant will allow fire departments to buy 128 mobile VHF analog/digital radios at an estimated cost of $3,000 each for a total of $384,000.
Fire departments also will purchase 256 VHF portable analog/digital radios at a cost of $2,000 each for a total of $512,000.
