Radio Traffic from the Plane Crash:

Update: The pilot and passenger survived the plane crash and were transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Unfortunately, the pilot Peter Sheeran passed away at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. The passenger John Whitmer is listed in serious condition at RMH. The men are from Charlottesville.

The plane was a Piper PA46 aircraft which is reported to have been taking off from the Roanoke Regional Airport.

The pilot and passenger both sustained life threatening injuries.

A small plane with two souls on board has reportedly crashed at the Valley Pointe Industrial Complex just north of the Roanoke Regional Airport. The building it crashed into is the UPS/Overnight building and we are not sure if there was damage to the building.  The airport is in the City, Valley Pointe is in the County. Both departments run this area. The City responds for mutual aid.

Roanoke Fire-EMS (City) and Roanoke County Firefighters are on scene. It should be noted that ARFF crews did respond from the Airport which is not common and has not happened in years. The airport is staffed by Roanoke Fire-EMS firefighters until July 1 when the airport will contract out with a subcontractor for firefighters.

The Roanoke Times is reporting that the passenger was able to escape the wreckage.
