The fire did drop into the walls of the second floor level of the home and caused a fair amount of damage there. Additionally, there is smoke damage throughout the second floor and water damage throughout the home.

March 6, 2010 (ROANOKE COUNTY) — Roanoke County Fire & Rescue was dispatched to the 10,000 block of Russwood Road about 11:15 last night for a structure fire.
When the first fire truck arrived on scene, firefighters found a single story house fully engulfed in flames. The second fire truck responding slid off the narrow, gravel road that was covered in ice, blocking the path for other incoming trucks. Crews then focused their efforts on drafting water from a near-by pond with a portable pump. It took volunteer and career crews from the Bent Mountain, Back Creek, and Cave Spring stations nearly five hours to put the flames out.
The house is a total loss.
The two adult men and 8 year-old girl who lived in the home are staying with neighbors and the Red Cross has been called to assist them with initial necessities.
Reportedly, a dog and cat lived in the home and are missing.
Fire Investigators are on scene trying to determine what caused the fire.

The Fire that broke out late Friday night in the 10,000 block of Russ Wood Road on Bent Mountain was a result of fire getting into the walls around the fireplace. The family was asleep at the time of the fire and had no working smoke detector. The home was occupied by a man and his 8-year-old daughter, along with a male roommate. The roommate awoke to a bedroom full of smoke and went to family room and saw flames across the ceiling and around the fireplace. He then woke up the father and his daughter and they escaped without harm. Their cat and dog perished in the fire. The house is a total loss.
House Fire at Hidden Woods Road
The fire that occurred on Sunday afternoon in the 6600 block of Hidden Woods Road has been determined to be accidental and started in the electrical receptacle in the second floor bathroom of the master bedroom. The fire quickly spread to the attic. No one was at home at the time of the fire and this resulted in a well-advanced fire prior to being detected, which burned the roof off of the structure and resulted in heavy fire damage throughout the second
floor. There is also smoke and heavy water damage throughout the rest of the home.

Updated: Cause – Apartment Fire Displaces Ten Residents
March 5, 2010 (ROANOKE COUNTY) — Investigators have determined that a fire that displaced 10 people started in an electrical outlet located in the wall between two apartments at the Cinnamon Ridge complex in South Roanoke County.
The two occupants in one of the apartments awoke at about 8:30 a.m. and smelled something burning. They went down stairs to investigate and could see flames through a small hole in the common wall to the next apartment. They could hear popping and cracking noises and called 9-1-1.
The two apartments where the fire started have extensive fire damage. Two other units also have some fire damage. The remaining four units have water and smoke damage. The attic over four of the apartments suffered heavy fire damage as well.
Seven of the eight apartments were being leased. The seven occupants and their families are now displaced and the Red Cross is assisting with housing, food, clothing, medication and other necessities. The Cinnamon Ridge Management is working to re-locate the residents in other vacant apartments within the complex.
No damage estimates are available at this time. It is expected to take months to complete the necessary repairs to the damaged units.
The injured firefighter was treated and released.
