Lancaster, Va. — Sad and speechless with his head bowed in dejection, a veteran Richmond firefighter yesterday listened to a judge recite a list of charges that label him as a man whose actions wrought terrible destruction. But one of Steven W. Nixon’s alleged victims, his wife, sat a few feet away in the courtroom in support. And as a lawyer recited Nixon’s long career as a firefighter, a lone traffic infraction 20 years ago, and Nixon’s ready cooperation with investigators, the attorney wept.

It’s been a tough month for Donis Baxter. On Aug. 4, she lost her husband of nearly 50 years. His inurnment was a week later. And this week, someone set fire to her business’s delivery van. The fire was reported about 1:15 a.m. Wednesday outside Baxter’s Florist and Gifts at 1920 Centerville Tnpk. in the Woods Corner Shopping Center, said Battalion Chief Tim Riley, a spokesman for the Fire Department.

Driver trapped for an hour in VB car ax – Wavy.com VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Police say speed was a factor in the crash that left one man trapped in his vehicle for an hour before rescue crews were able to free him Wednesday afternoon. According to police, the driver, a 23-year-old male was driving west on Providence Road in Virginia Beach when he lost control of his vehicle, ran off the road and struck a tree head-on, just prior to College Park Boulevard.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Lightning set a house on fire in the Cavalier Manor neighborhood of Portsmouth Wednesday evening.
Fire Department spokesman Capt. Paul Hoyle said a bolt of lightning struck a single-story house in the 3800 block of Greenwood Drive around 5:30 p.m. The strike, which hit the kitchen area, set the front of the house on fire, Hoyle said.

Justin Fedorchak, 39, of Manassas, and Tegee Rogers, 33, of Herndon were charged with three felonies: manufacturing and using an explosive device, setting a fire capable of spreading, and burning or destroying a meeting house on July 24, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department officials said in a press release.

Roanoke Fire-EMS Responds to Ordway Dr. Fire
On August 19, 2010, Roanoke Fire-EMS responded to a structure fire at 3315 Ordway Dr., The Holiday Inn. The call was received in the E-911 Center at 10:54 p.m. and was ruled under control at 11:08 p.m. This call was escalated to a second alarm because it is a hotel. The response of 6 engines, 3 ladder trucks, 3 Medic Units, 1 EMS Captain, 3 Administrative Chiefs, 2 Battalion Chiefs and the Investigation Unit for a total of 39 personnel arrived on scene.

When crews arrived they found heavy black smoke on the 5th floor of the hotel. The sprinkler system put most of the fire out. The fire started in an ice machine on the 5th floor. Crews searched all floors to make sure that everyone in the hotel had exited the building. After crews finished extinguishing the fire, they removed smoke from the building. Once Carbon Monoxide levels were checked, people were allowed back inside. The hotel told us they were at 60% capacity and they would be able to house guests in different rooms on floors that weren’t affected by the fire.

It is unknown how many people were in the hotel when the fire started. One person was transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for smoke inhalation. There were no injuries to Fire-EMS personnel.

The fire started in an ice machine on the 5th floor and was contained to the machine. Damage estimates are approximately $15,000.
