Fredericksburg.com – Man surveys home’s charred remains

Ray Irwin rummaged through his burned home yesterday afternoon, a few hours after being released from the hospital.

He had blisters on the top of his head and bandages on a wrist and an ankle. He walked with a limp.

Irwin’s Stafford County home caught fire Friday night–less than two months after he, his wife and his mother-in-law moved in. One of the family’s 14 cats knocked over a scented oil lamp in a portion of a garage that had been converted into office space, Irwin said. The fire spread quickly and “was already out of control” when firefighters arrived six minutes after receiving word of the blaze, he said.
