Why national and local fire departments are seeing fewer volunteers

Fewer people are volunteering at fire stations. It’s a problem not just locally but nationwide.

This week, Virginia’s Fire Chiefs Association reported the lack of volunteers as the number one issue facing departments today.

Here in Roanoke County, the fire department has also seen the number of volunteers decline over the years. That means hiring more paid full time firefighters.

    re: volunteers

    is it because of regulations?

the State should pay for current people to take tests (but not training) of people who have already passed previous exams.

ie, pay for your 1st exam, if you have to take more tests the state pays.

i’m sure things haven’t changed much in years for stabilizing a patient and getting them ready for transport??
    (sorry if i’m wrong).

Why make it more difficult on volunteers?
