Heather Vineyard sat on a couch in the lobby of the Super 8 hotel in Northwest Roanoke and cried.
Hours earlier, she watched from the street as her Vinton apartment was consumed by flames.
The Red Cross took her, barefoot and dressed in borrowed clothes, to the Thirlane Road hotel.
A man approached and gave her a hug.
“I’m sorry,” he said, unlacing his black and silver Nike sneakers. He handed the shoes to Vineyard.
