Firefighters hone skills in massive Bedford training exercise

BEDFORD –

Volunteer firefighters raced into a smoking training center Saturday in Bedford to perfect their skills.

Though the victims were so-called “Rescue Randys,” dummies weighing about 180 pounds each, firefighters encountered real dangers.

“Safety is going to be paramount,” said John “Roc” Moore, a Bedford County firefighter. “This is advanced training.”

Five volunteer fire departments from Moneta, Saunders, Smith Mountain Lake, Hardy and Stewartsville gathered at the Bedford Fire and Rescue Training Center for Saturday’s exercise, marking the largest inter-department training in Bedford County.
