Hardy Volunteer Fire Company officially announced in service there new addition to the department, Wagon 12.

Wagon 12 built by M&W Fire Apparatus Inc. in Vinton, VA.

Wagon 12 is a 2009 Spartan Metro with an M&W built ESR M10 Fire body. This piece is powered by a Cummins ISC 360 hp diesel engine with an exhaust brake and is driven by an Allison EVS 3000 tranny. Each seat has David Clark headsets for in-truck communication. The body is made from 5052 aluminum alloy with aluminum roll-up style doors and consists of a rear safety chevron covering the back section of the apparatus.

For fire operations the apparatus consists of a 1000 gallon poly tank that is pumped by a 1250 GPM Hale QFLO pump. The pump is controlled by a Pump Boss Pressure Governor system. The hose package consists of two (2) 200’ of 1.5” cross lay attack lines and a trash/booster line off the front bumper. Our power supply for the on-scene lighting is an Onan PTO driven generator. The hose bed consists of 250’ of 2.5” hose, 350’ of 3” hose and 1000’ of 5” rubber large diameter supply hose. Each seat consists of a Scott 4500 SCBA and one extra Scott 4500 SCBA mounted in the back of the cab for the engineer. Five (5) extra Scott 4500 bottles are also available in special compartments throughout the truck. Other fire suppression equipment utilized on this truck consists of:

one (1) Super-Vac positive pressure fan

one (1) Smoke Ejector

one (1) Tac Stick electrical detection tool

one (1) Bullard T3 MAX Thermal Image Camera

one (1) QRAE II gas monitor

one (1) set of married irons

Numerous Dewalt cordless power tools

Numerous firefighting hand tools (pike poles, shovels, etc.)

a salvage cover

a 12’ ground ladder, a 24’ ground ladder, and a 10’ fold-up attic ladder

an ABC extinguisher, a CO-2 extinguisher, and two (2) water cans

Each seat is set up to have the firefighter assigned a tool on scene for operations. Even the officer’s seat is assigned an officer’s tool which is a FireMaxx multi-purpose tool.

Wagon 12 was marked in service May 16, 2010, and will serve the community of Hardy and the surrounding areas in Bedford and Franklin Counties well in fire suppression and support. Hardy Volunteer Fire Company would like to thank all who has contributed their time and effort on Wagon 12 and a special thanks to Stewartsville-Chamblissburg Fire Department 13, Moneta Fire Company 8, and Bedford County Fire and Rescue for their support. A very special thanks to the Hardy Life Saving Crew.

“New” Delivery – Stanley, Virginia
By Mike Sanders

A 1986 Pierce Arrow engine is now serving its third career at the Stanley Volunteer Fire Department in Page County. Originally ordered by the McLean Volunteer Fire Department in Fairfax County, the Pierce Arrow is equipped with a 1250 gpm pump and carries 500 gallons of water.

McLean sold the Pierce to the Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department in 1996. With the recent delivery of a new engine at Sperryville, there was no room for the Pierce. Reluctantly, Sperryville placed the Pierce for sale and sold it in December of 2009 to the Stanley volunteers. Engine 26 was placed into service at Stanley in February of 2010.

This Stanley photograph was taken at the recent 2010 Apple Blossom fireman’s parade in Winchester. My thanks to the Stanley crew that day who took the time and effort to move the Pierce for photographs.

The KME body was completed with customized shelving, trays, tool boards, etc. within in the body compartments for mounting of the fire department’s engine equipment.

The Bacon District Vol. Fire Department provides first alarm coverage to the lower Charlotte county area as well as mutual aid into both Mecklenburg and Halifax counties. In addition to fire suppression, EMS First Responder service is also provided to these same jurisdictions.

This KME apparatus was sold by Calvin (Sput) Jones of Slagle Fire Equipment Co. in South Boston, Va.

Slagle’s Fire Equipment Co.

The Culpeper County Volunteer Fire Company of Culpeper Virginia recently took delivery of a new KME rescue pumper. This unit will be the primary responding suppression and rescue apparatus on automobile accidents and fires as well as other rescue assignments within their coverage area. On structural fires it will function as the third due engine apparatus as well as well as a squad company that will be capable of refilling SCBA air cylinders with an onboard high pressure cascade air system. This single apparatus will replace a previously utilized beverage style rescue truck and a traditional pumper apparatus. The fire company apparatus committee was looking for an easy to use, easy to maintain apparatus that resulted in a number of unique features provided which include enclosed pump panel areas, vertically stacked speedlays with easy pack capability, both calibrated foam and water for firefighting, 6000 psi air cascade system, large AC generator system, vertical type light mast, four rescue reels with pre connected tools, electric controlled hinged covers on the primary hose bed area, and over 200 cubic feet of enclosed storage compartments.

The apparatus is built on a Spartan Gladiator custom cab and chassis with a seating for six personnel. For enhanced response capabilities, there is a Detroit Series 60 430 horse power engine for more than adequately powering the vehicle as well as an engine brake and front disc brakes for stopping. The cab has seating for a total of six personnel with five SCBA seat positions having Bostrom “Secure-All” quic-release SCBA brackets, all having Firecom Wireless headsets that permit improved communication both during response as well as on the scene within 1200 feet of the apparatus. For rehab and extended operations, there is a shoreline and generator powered refrigerator / freezer unit in the cab.

The pump system includes a Waterous 1750 GPM single stage midship pump with Detroit “Fire Commander” pressure control system, Trident air primer system, replaceable cathodic protection anodes, and an automatic thermal relief valve for ease of operator use and pump protection. The pump system has three 6” inlets with interior mounted inline butterfly valves on both the driver, officer, and front inlets. For ease of connection, the front inlet has a recessed hose well built into the front hinged bumper with storage for 25 feet of 6” soft suction hose. The pump discharges include two 2” transverse speedlay style hose beds with slide-out hose packing trays in front of the pump, 4” LDH discharge on the officer side pump panel, three (3) 2-1/2” discharges on the side panels, one 2-1/2” hose bed discharge, one 3” discharge with Akron Apollo “Hi-Riser” deck gun above the pump panel areas, and a 2” front bumper discharge. For enhanced firefighting, there is a Foam Pro Model 2002 electronic injection type foam system that provides Class-A foam solution to up to four preconnect discharges. The system receives foam concentrate from the on-board 30 gallon foam cell that augments the 600 gallon water tank. For ease of refilling the foam cell, there is a 12 GPM electronic foam refill system with automatic controls from the pump panel area.

Both the driver and officer side pump panels, as well as the discharges, and inlets are fully enclosed within roll-up door compartments similar to the body compartments that provide protection from the elements as well as affording additional storage areas for cord reels and mounted rescue tools.

The primary hose bed has storage for 1200 feet of 4” supply hose as well as a 2-1/2” preconnect and up to 500 additional feet of attack line. For safer access to the hose bed area as well as the upper coffin compartment and dunnage area above the fire pump, there is a vertical climbing ladder on the driver side rear. The hose bed area is protected by a hinged aluminum cover system that is easily opened and closed by way of 12 volt electric actuators controlled at the rear of the vehicle.

The apparatus body was a special design by KME that afforded 29” deep x 68” high side compartments on each side of the body for specialized storage. The driver side includes an upper integral “coffin” style compartment that runs the full length of the body while the officer side has a Zico hydraulic ladder rack with enclosure for a set of Duo-Safety ground ladders. The fender well areas were also utilized for additional storage of eight high pressure air cylinders that provide ready storage in addition to what can be recharged from the three bank, 6000 psi ASME storage for the refill system that includes a “Space Saver” dual cylinder fill enclosure.

With vehicle extrication being a primary function of the apparatus, there is a Harrison 30,000 watt hydraulic generator system that provides both 120 volt and 240 volt power. This provides power to a 6000 watt Wilburt 20 foot vertical light mast, four 1000 watt recessed halogen lights on the upper sides of the body and two 1000 watt halogen forward cab mounted brow lights as well as two (2) CMW electric rewind cord reels with 200 feet of 10/3 cable and junction boxes. In addition, the generator is capable of powering two TNT 220 volt Simo hydraulic pump units at the same time for providing power to four CMW brand hydraulic reels that have two TNT Combi tools, a TNT full size cutter, and a TNT full size spreader preconnected. Additional rescue equipment carried includes a portable TNT power unit for off-vehicle use, four TNT hydraulic rescue rams, tractor jacks, miscellaneous cribbing, and a full set of Rescue 42 static and dynamic struts.
For fire support functions, there are dealer mounted items such as an electric powered PPV blower, rotary and chain type ventilation saws as well as a full NFPA complement of ground ladders, pike poles, hand tools, adapters, nozzles, etc. With hazard control also being a mission of the vehicle, there is an on-board high capacity “Sta-Dri” bin with output piped below the body for ease of use.

Warning devices include a full complement of Whelen high intensity LED lighting including a rear directional light bar as well as audible devices such as a Federal Q2B mechanical siren, Power Call electronic siren, and dual Hadley Emergency Series air horns.

For increased safety, the apparatus features KME customized lettering and striping with over 70% of the rear of the body being overlaid with high visibility scotchlite material in a chevron pattern as well as NFPA compliant side and front striping. In addition, all lettering is also scotchlite reflective material.

This unit represents over two years of planning by the Culpeper membership and the apparatus committee working thru the KME dealership of Slagle Fire Equipment Co. of South Boston, Va. with design, construction, and final equipment mounting.

New Delivery – Orkney Springs, Virginia
By Mike Sanders

If you attended the recent fire show in Virginia Beach, chances are you saw this interesting new fire truck delivered to Orkney Springs, Virginia.

Orkney Springs is Station 18 in Shenandoah County. Located about 10 miles off of I81 outside of Mt. Jackson, the new Wagon 18-1 is a 2009 Spartan Gladiator Evolution with a 2010 Smeal body. The delivery of Wagon 18-1 was coordinated by Keplinger Repair Service in Winchester, Virginia.

Hills and tight areas are common in the Orkney Springs area. As a result, the department required a shorter engine without a front intake to help get around the mountainous area and protect the 1,200 homes located with the Bryce Resort area, which Orkney Springs is first due.

The new Spartan/Smeal was delivered to Orkney Springs during March and is equipped with a 1500 gallon per minute pump, holds 750 gallons of water, and 20 gallons of foam. Other features include seating for six, a 10″ raised roof, 515 horsepower Detroit diesel, a LDH discharge on the right side, and a Smeal hydraulic ladder rack on the left side.

My thanks to Chief Aaron Miller for helping with all of the photographs of Wagon 18-1.

The Sterling Volunteer Rescue Squad in Loudoun County Virginia will shortly be placing into service their new Rescue 615. The order and delivery was handled by the Keplinger Repair Service Inc. of Winchester, Virginia.

Rescue 615 is a 2010 Spartan Gladiator with a SVI squad body. The Spartan Gladiator cab has a 20 inch raised roof with a unique custom built walk in compartment behind the crew cab. The SVI squad body is 26′ long. The American Flag and a tribute to FDNY adorn the sides of Rescue 615.

Other features of the new squad include a Cummins ISM-500 engine with an Allison transmission and a 30KW pto operated generator. A unique stairway leads to upper hatch compartments. On the upper sides of the squad body are rope tie offs. In addition, a Will-Burt 9000 watt light tower is housed on top of the squad.

A winch is located on the front and rear of the Spartan/SVI. The front winch is a 15,000 lb electric winch and the rear winch is a 20,000 lb hydraulic winch.

The new Rescue 615 replaces a 1990 Duplex/Saulsbury heavy squad, which is currently for sale. For additional information on the squad for sale, please contact Sterling Rescue Chief Byron Andrews at bandrews@sterlingrescue.org.

Engine 618 is equipped with a 1500 gallon per minute pump and carries 750 gallons of water. It also has a 12″ raised roof. The new KME replaces a 1995 Spartan/Saulsbury that was sold earlier in the year to the Bakerton, West Virginia VFD.

In addition to the new KME, Sterling operates a variety of other apparatus which include two Smeal quints, two Pierce engines, a Seagrave tower ladder, and a variety of support units.

Stafford, VA – On Monday, December 14th at 7:00 a.m., the Stafford County Fire and Rescue Department significantly increased pre-hospital emergency medical response and transport capabilities in the community by placing two additional Medic Units in service.
“In such uncertain and challenging economic times, it is truly a milestone to witness the implementation of these public safety assets to the community,” said Fire and Rescue Chief Rob Brown. “The metropolitan region, mirroring national trends, is experiencing the challenges of maintaining an adequate public safety workforce. We are proud of the fact that our elected government was willing to work closely with county staff to ultimately ensure the enhanced health and safety of residents and visitors to Stafford County.”
The career staffed, 24-hour advanced life support (ALS) units will be based at Rescue Company 7 in White Oak and Fire and Rescue Station 2 in the Stafford Courthouse area.
They are staffed by career personnel, including an ALS trained technician/paramedic, and will provide 24-hour emergency care and transportation, including advanced patient interventions such as cardiac monitoring/defibrillation and advanced airway care. The men and women assigned to Medic 2 and Medic 7 will rotate on a 3-shift, 24 hour schedule to provide around-the-clock coverage.
“Our goal is to respond to 911 calls in eight minutes or less,” said Stafford County Administrator Anthony Romanello. “Adding these units to our rotation will move us closer to that goal and enhance the care we give to our patients before they arrive at the hospital.”

by Mike Sanders

Fairfax County has recently taken delivery of a new HAZMAT Squad that will be assigned to Fire Station 440 in Fairfax Center.

HAZMAT 440 is a 2009 Pierce Velocity with a 30′ custom built command, research, and equipment body. It is powered by a 515hp Detroit diesel series 60 engine and also has a Will-Burt light tower. The Fairfax County HAZMAT team consists of a two piece company located at Fire Station 440 and several heavy squads that specialize in HAZMAT support located throughout the county.

The original HAZMAT company was established in Fairfax County during the 1983 time period when Fire Station 34 in Oakton was opened. The very first HAZMAT squad was an interesting 1963 GMC/Reading that quickly became loaded down with equipment. The 1963 GMC was originally a rescue truck for the Mt. Vernon volunteers. A former heavy squad for the county (Squad 11 – 1980 Ford L/3D Metals) was modified for HAZMAT 34 in 1984, and provided some additional storage space.

In the early 1990′s, the HAZMAT team became a true two piece company, with a large HAZMAT unit and a large support unit. Prior to that time, a pick up truck ran with the HAZMAT unit to carry some of the larger equipment. A 1990 E-One Hush and a 1991 International/Hackney were delivered. Finally, in 2003 the county placed into service a large Spartan/Marion HAZMAT squad and a 2004 Spartan/SuperVac as the support unit. In 2006, the HAZMAT team was moved from Fire Station 34 in Oakton to the current Fire Station 440 in Fairfax Center (near the Training Academy).
