Pittsylvania County's 21 volunteer fire departments, including Hurt, will receive new radios thanks to a $716,800 Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Chatham Volunteer Fire Department, which applied for the federal grant, recently received notification of the award. The total project is $896,000.

Lt. Bryan Adkins remembered working in downtown's Fire Station No. 1 and seeing marks that were left by horses nibbling the walls. Since that station went out of active service, he moved to Fire Station No. 5, built in 1911 at the corner of 12th Street and Loudon Avenue Northwest.

An investigation is underway after firefighters in Spotsylvania County, Virginia failed to find a woman who was on the phone, trapped in her house, while firefighters were inside searching. It apparently took repeated attempts and more than 20 minutes before firefighters finally found 43-year-old Sandy Hill on February 5.

Lynchburg, VA – A Lynchburg house fire destroyed more than just an old home Tuesday night. It ended the life of a man who mentored and helped out so many in the Cabell Street community.
