On February 2, 2012 around 2300 hours, Harrisonburg Rescue, Squad 41, and Engine 402 responded to a vehicle crash with reported overturned vehicle and people trapped on Mt. Clinton Pike just outside the City of Harrisonburg, Va. Upon arrival, units found one male patient ejected and two female patients trapped underneath an SUV that was on its side. Immediately crews began stabilization of the vehicle while treating the patients that were trapped under the vehicle. Aircare 5 was requested to the scene along with 2 additional Harrisonburg Ambulances. The two trapped patients were positioned on opposite sides of the vehicles making stabilization and extrication challenging. Crews used Paratech struts and Enerpac ram attachments to vertically lift the SUV to free both patients. One female patient was flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center and the two others were transported by ground to Rockingham Memorial Hospital. The current condition of the patients is still unknown at this time.

But thanks in part to a FEMA grant known as Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response or S.A.F.E.R.; the county added eight full time firefighters and EMS responders to its volunteer force last May.

The added responders mean a full time firefighter is in the Fincastle station at all times and EMS workers are stationed in Fincastle, Troutville, and Buchanan.

Fincastle Volunteer Fire Chief Dave Moran said having a full time responder has significantly improved his department’s response times.

Joint Fundraiser to Benefit F.D.N.Y. Rescue 2 Injured Firefighters Established by MN8-Foxfire, FireCritic.com and IronFiremen.com

Cincinnati, OH, January 23, 2012— MN8-Foxfire, the developer of breakthrough illuminating products for firefighters, Lt. Rhett Fleitz of the Fire Critic blog (FireCritic.com) and Captain Willie Wines Jr. of the Wooden Ladders and Iron Firemen blog (IronFiremen.com) have teamed up to establish a joint fundraiser to support two injured firefighters with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) Rescue 2. The fundraiser begins on Monday, January 23 and ends at midnight on Monday, January 30. During this time, MN8-Foxfire will donate 50 percent of all product sales through the company website to the FDNY Rescue 2 Mayday Fund. Opportunities for individuals to make donations without a product purchase will also be available through the MN8-Foxfire website at www.mn8products.com.

On Monday, December 19, 2011, two firefighters from Rescue 2 suffered severe burns during a brownstone structure fire and were in critical condition upon hospital admittance. Both men face long recoveries. One is still hospitalized in critical condition and the other is now recovering at home under the care of a burn center outpatient program.

“We were devastated to hear about the fire involving the Brooklyn firefighters as we have a special connection with Rescue 2,” said Zachary Green, president of MN8-Foxfire. “I’d met and spent some time Captain Liam Flaherty (from Rescue 2) in San Diego last year. Then last fall, Willie, Rhett and I visited Rescue 2 and they welcomed us like we were part of their team.”

“We had great discussions over coffee with Captain Flaherty and his men at their kitchen table and even watched a hockey game with them while we were there,” said Wines.

Fleitz, Wines and Green will travel to New York to personally present a check towards the FDNY Rescue 2 Mayday Fund during the first week of February. “There is such a sense of brotherhood among firefighters,” said Fleitz. “And when one of our brothers is in need, the firefighting community pulls together. We want to do all we can to help these men and their families.”

All Foxfire illuminating products are eligible for the 50 percent Rescue 2 Mayday fundraiser, including illuminating helmet bands, coating kits, grip wrap, tetrahedrons, equipment bands and t-shirts.

Brunswick County – Fire units responded to a reported vehicle in a lake Saturday morning at Lake Gaston. The single vehicle wreck occurred on Gasburg Road at the Pea Hill Creek bridge in Gasburg. The driver of the vehicle was able to escape out of the driver’s side window before his Toyota pick-up sank in about eighteen feet of water about thirty feet from shore. He was able to walk to a store and call for help. No other person was in the vehicle.

Gasburg VFD called for Lake Gaston VFD’s dive team as well as Roanoke-Wildwood VFD’s dive team from Warren County (NC) to assist with recovery operations. Gasburg Road was closed for almost four hours while the heavy-duty wrecker pulled the truck from the water then eventually lifted it over the guard rail and lowered in onto the roadway in from of the gathered crowd.

Central Volunteer Rescue Squad, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, and the Virginia State Police also responded.

Appomattox, VA – Investigators are calling the cause of a fire that destroyed an Appomattox home and killed two dogs “suspicious.”

The state police’s Arson and Bomb team are leading this investigation. Special Agent Keith Childress isn’t calling it arson, but says burn patterns at the home appear suspicious. He’s waiting to see if evidence sent to the crime lab tests positive for accelerants. He also says there are no signs of forced entry.

Jane Edmunds cradled in her hand a small glass paperweight, one of the items salvaged from her historic 10206 River Road home, Creekside, which was gutted by fire Friday evening.

“I got it at an auction, and I liked the way light shining through it created different colors,” she said, while stoically watching fire crews from two counties fight the blaze, which took six hours to bring under control, according to Turbeville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ricky Hicks.

The fire at Creekside represented the second major fire at a historic Dabney Cosby Jr.-built home within three weeks.
